Healthy Snacking Between Meals

by Jenna Summers

You may have heard the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”  Apples are considered a super food.  They are packed with vitamins and minerals, fiber, good carbohydrates and even a little protein.

You may also have heard that eating 5-6 nutritious mini meals a day, or a healthy snack between meals will keep your metabolism in a calorie burning mode.  Here’s something I do to combine the two.  It tricks my mind into thinking I’m actually “snacking” on something like a bowl of chips.

  1. Cut a whole apple in half from stem to blossom end.
  2. Cut each half in half again.
  3. Cut out the little strip of core on each section.
  4. Keep cutting each section until you have about 12-16 slices of apple.

Now enjoy your bowl of “apple chips”.  Your hands are busy picking up pieces so it feels like you’re really snacking on something.  It curbs your appetite and keeps your metabolism from slipping between meals.  I don’t personally care for eating apples whole, but when I started slicing them up in this manner, I suddenly found myself in love with them.

Optional Nutritional Boost

If you’d like to include something sweet and packed with protein and healthy Omega 3 & 6  fats, you can dip the apples in almond butter.  But not too much, afterall, fat is still fat and 1 tablespoon of almond butter has about 100 calories.

Next time you go to the store, try different types of apples.  They are not all the same.  My favorite are Braeburn apples.  They have a low acidity and the smell is heavenly.  Aside from the usual stand-bys like Delicious or Golden apples, try Gala, McIntosh, Pink Lady, and Fuji.
