How to strengthen leg muscles at home?

I injured my knee a while back and my trainer told me to work on getting the muscles around the knee area and on the sides of my leg tone and strong again. Besides lifting weights, what are some do at home workouts I can do that will really tone my legs like running up and down stairs for example. Thanks.
