I have been attending exercise “boot camp”

Question:
we never ran or jogged only in warm up. The last day of the class was semi nice out and only 3 people showed so the guy said “lets go for a light run” meaning ok, around the block. No one took water and i was all in black as we are inside for boot camp.so we start to jog and I have not jogged since grade 9…I am now 38..anyway to make along story short we start to jog and he wont let me stop and it was 4K.That with NO training, no proper breathing, water or clothing. My legs swelled up that night of course. should we not have been building up to that??? and how can I build up to it?

Answer:

WTF was he trying to prove? He’s supposed to be INSTRUCTING how to do ANY workout properly so you don’t get injured. I’d report that moron to the company. I would have turned around and went back.

The way that I built up to that type of run was to start off on a treadmill. Switch off between walking and running. Start off just adding short burst of running in between your walking. Gradually build up the time as you start to feel more comfortable with running. When you get to your goal of running most of the workout, then you can still add in challenge by changing up the speed and incline on the treadmill. Then, when you are ready take to the road. Remember that running in natural terrain is always going to be more challenging because you have to contend with the wind and weather, as well as the variations in the grade and type of running surface. Make sure you always have plenty of fluids on hand and good shoes. Of course, make sure your doctor is okay with you doing any workout before you try it.
