Question:

I want to work out my shoulders, but have absolutely no idea how! I have no equipment and I’m not heading towards the gym since my schedule won’t cooperate with it.

I’m thinking of working out at home, and basically I just want more muscles on my shoulders and I want them to be larger. So are there any “at home” exercises, you would recommend? Feel free to tell me what you do for these exercises as well! Thanks!

I do not do sports, and am 6’4, pretty thin arms & legs. Except my stomach is a bit fatter than it should be. How do i fix this? Anything specific to eat or exercises to do?

Answer:

Start off with healthy eating habits. Lean protein, complex carbs (no sugars or refined flours), good fats found in things like almonds, also plentry of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Then add some strength training exercises. You can do them right at home. You’ll want to do total body workouts to engage all muscles. The lean muscle you build will make you stronger and it will boost your metabolism to burn off fat. The good news is that one of the first places you’ll notice it will be around you belly. Your pants will get looser around your waist.

You also don’t need to buy workout DVDs. Just click here to sign up for free workouts from Bodylastics. I highly suggest getting a set of their resistance bands you can get the most benefit from the workouts.

Question:

Serious answers only. My friend thinks no ab workout is the best ab workout. He claims that working all other muscle groups ( bench pressing, squats etc) is indirectly working your abs and that when you add up these indirect gains, it is enough work for your abs and that adding crunches is over working your abs. He says flexing your abs while lifting is enough and that doing abs is a “waste of time”. Is their any science/biology that proves your abs are being worked enough?

Answer:

You’re friend may be referring to compound exercises that work more than one muscle group at a time. But if you want to isolate only the ab muscles, then you have to do ab exercises. However, don’t spend your time doing only abs exercises because you’ll also need to do back exercises so your back muscles become as strong as your abs. Always maintain balance.

To get an idea of what type of exercises to do, click here for completely free workouts from the makers of Bodylastics resistance bands. They have an ab show called Eight Pack. Also checkout Chiseled.

Question:

I’m 38yrs, 5’8″ and 145lbs. I’m looking for a “home” program, something I can do when I get home from my full time job (sitting on the phone all day), at least 3 times a week. I have my evenings open, so I almost could do it nightly.

I have a treadmill and a weight set, although I have never really lifted weights regularly nor do I know the proper techniques to make the workout worth while…for instance how much weight, how many reps for how long?

I have been told to eat a lot carbs and protein, what kinds of foods contain these? I also bought a 4lb jar of “Weight Gainer” powder mix from GNC and have drank more than half of it without any weight change so I obviously need some direction.

Answer:

The carbs you want are the good carbs that come from whole grains, not the white flour refined carbs or sugar. Protein, yes. Lean protein from white meat, fish, even all types of beans.

Skip the treadmill. Sell it. cardio workouts are the worst thing for building muscle. They are for heart health.

About the amount of resistance you should be lifting. Do circuits. Those are exercises for specific body parts. You can do total body workouts 3x a week or do upper one day and lower the next. Start with 10 reps per exercise with enough resistance so you can barely finish the last rep. That’s how you know if you’re using enough resistance. Then very quickly set up for the next exercise and do 10 reps of that. When you complete all the exercises, that’s one full circuit. That’s all you can probably do to begin with. Then gradually workup to 2, then 3 circuits.

There is an excellent beginners resistance training workout show called TX2. It’s for teens and people who haven’t worked out before. It uses Bodylastics resistance bands. Once you get good at TX2, then graduate to the Chiseled workouts. They are more intense.

The Bodylastics bands are adjustable with clips on the ends, so changing resistance is hella easy and quick. Oh, and each Bodylastics set comes with a circuit training DVD. Complete sets start at under $30, but I recommend the Super Strong Man set for you. It’s got enough bands for a total of 202 lbs of tension. You can always buy additional individual bands later on if you need to expand.

Question:

I’m 12 years old, 5 ft 6 in, and I weigh 231 pounds. Yes I know its a lot, but this is why I’m so desperate! Please don’t make fun of me! Anyway, I’ve been trying to lose weight, and so far this week I lost about 2-3 pounds. I heard that’s the average weight loss per week. My step dad said he’s gonna help me tomorrow by lifting weights. I was confused because I didn’t want to gain weight by building muscle, but to just lose fat. He said the more muscle, the easier you can lose weight in the long run. I also heard that I could lose an extra 50 calories a day for every pound of muscle. Anyway, should I use whey to help build muscle, or just “turn my fat into muscle”. I also heard that while building muscle, you lose weight. Is this true? If so, how much? Thank you everyone who helps me with my problem!

Answer:

You can’t turn fat into muscle any more than you can turn a Chevy into a Ford.

Your dad is the bomb! He knows his stuff. You WANT to build muscle because each lb of muscle burns like 40-50 calories per day just to stay alive. If you gain muscle, the fat will melt off your body. Even though a lb of muscle weighs the same as a lb of fat, the muscle takes up much less space. So even though you gain muscle and the muscle burns off the fat, you are trading massive amounts of volume in fat, for the significantly small space that muscle takes up.

Lifting weights is a good thing, but be sure to workout your entire body. You can supplement your muscle building with Bodylastics resistance bands and their free workout show called Chiseled.

Question:

Don’t give me that bs how girls can’t build muscle. I have been working out, and now I look so gross. I started working out to lose my leg fat. However, I still have my leg fat, and now + huge muscles. Makes my legs look enormous compared to my upper half. My arms are built too but no where near the extent of my legs. How do you lose the fat from your legs without building any muscle? I would also like to lose some of the muscle too.

Answer:

You screwed up, cupcake. You CANNOT target fat loss with isolated exercises. Yes, you can target muscles to build those muscles, obviously you’re proof of that. But doing leg exercises won’t make you lose the fat on your legs. That’s not the way the body loses fat. I loses it all over.

You also screwed the pooch when all you did was leg exercises. That’s why your body is now out of proportion. You have to workout the entire body to stay in balance.

You don’t want to lose muscle because it’s the muscle that’s going to allow you to lose the most fat. Just don’t workout your legs so much for a while, but don’t try to lose the muscle. Lean muscles burns like 40-50 calories a day just to stay alive. If you lose your muscle, you lose much of your ability to burn fat.

Do resistance training with resistance bands. Get the kind with the clips on the end like Bodylastics so you can adjust them for the various muscle group workouts.

Question:

Every girl I ever speak to says the same thing “I don’t want to gain muscle” and I have to wonder, why not? Why not try to get in the best condition you can be in?

Answer:

Women are afraid to build muscle because they think big muscles will look gross on a female body. The truth is, women don’t have the hormones to build big muscles like men do. Women can build muscle without looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

And little do they know that the more lean muscle they have, the faster they will lose fat and keep it off. That’s because each pound of muscle needs like 40-50 calories a day just to stay alive so the more muscle you have, the more fat you’ll burn, even while you sleep.

Too many women rush to the cardio machines; treadmills, elipticals, spinning, etc. and then they complain that they’re not losing weight or that it takes too much time to do. The fact is, cardio SUCKS for losing fat. Cardio is for conditioning your heart, not your muscles.

What you want to do is strength training, also called resistance training. The easiest and more affordable way to do that is with Bodylastics resistance bands. There’s NO going to the gym, NO heavy expensive dangerous weights and you don’t need a workout room in your house.

If you’re just starting out, do 10 reps for each muscle group. You want to use enough tension so you can barely complete the 10th rep. Rest for about 10 seconds and then do the next exercise. You’ll probably need to use a different amount of tension for the various exercises, but it’s super easy to adjust the resistance with Bodylastics because the tubes have clips for attaching to the various included accessories.

Once you complete working out all the muscle groups, that’s called a circuit. Beginners might only be able to complete one circuit, but optimally work your way up to 3 circuits. On that third circuit, when the resistance becomes too easy, just kick it up a few pounds so your muscles stay challenged.

If you’re not sure how to use Bodylastics, they have completely free workouts. I suggest starting with the workout show called TX2. It’s a basic beginners resistance training workout. Click here for special pricing on Bodylastics.

Question:

My height is around 157 and i’m about 46kg

I really need to lose some weight and get rid of some fats. I’m 14 and i desperately wants to get rid of the fats on my tummy and on my thighs. i have been doing sit-ups, but the maximum i can do at once is around 25. will it work if i do sit ups daily?

i want to lose weight back to around 42kg and get rid of the fats on my tummy and thighs cause they will look awful. can you all recommend some good solutions (i dont want any diet pills nonsense), some good exercises (best if can do at home or in a room – no need much space) and a good diet plan.

how long will it probably take to get rid of my tummy fats and lose weight back to 42kg?

-ps. please don’t give short and simple answers like “exercise”, “eat less”, “go on diet” etc! -

Answer:

All the situps in the world will not get rid of your tummy fat. Yes, you can do targeted exercises to build nice ab muscles, but you won’t see them until you lose the fat and you CANNOT target fat loss with isolation exercises. Your body loses fat all over, not just in one place.

The fastest, healthiest and most efficient way to lose fat is with strength training. You want to make nice lean muscle. The new muscle will melt the fat off because each pound of muscle burns about 40-50 calories a day. Even though you will gain some muscle, muscle has less volume than fat. A pound of each weighs the same, but muscle takes up less space.

Bodylastics, the maker of these resistance bands, has a free online workout show called TX2. It’s a good, solid beginner strength training course for teens or anyone wanting to start a strength training course. Click here for all the free workouts.

As for diet, cut out fatty and sugary foods. Only eat lean protein, white protein like fish, chicken, etc. Protein shakes are good, too. Get a 2lb tub of protein powder. I drink a shake every morning with breakfast. I have one of those Magic Bullet blenders that I use to mix it up.

Question:

Please break it down for me. Most overweight people of course are more focused on losing weight, getting on a scale to check progress (I admit I do this). I get frustrated when I worked out a lot but weighed the same or even gained weight. I come to find out that I am “building muscle.” This doesn’t make sense. For all our lives we’ve been told the key is to lose weight, not “lose inches”. We think we are doing good trying to make our weight number go down. So please tell me which is most important? If it’s only about the inches why are people so worried about get down to X number? Is it more important to get to the lowest appropriate number for your body? Or just to lose fat? I have seen athletic girls but I heard they weigh over 200 pounds! And they are healthy! I am so confused!

Answer:

Absolutely without a doubt, losing inches is the true measurement of your “weight loss” goal. You WANT to build muscle because muscle burns fat faster than anything. And yes, a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, BUT the muscle has far less volume. A pound of fat takes up more room than a pound of muscle.

The fastest way to build muscle is with strength training. It doesn’t need to be any more complex than working out with Bodylastics resistance bands. They’re inexpensive, portable and the best quality bands on the market. Do 10 reps with enough resistance so you can barely complete the last rep, while still using good form.
