What are some good back, buttock and pec exercises?

Q: I would like to tone my back, buttocks and pectorals without using weights (I’m a young guy).
Thanks.

A:  You don’t mention if you have any fat that needs to be lost.  So I’ll just mention this, while you can do isolation exercises for specific muscle groups, doing them won’t lose fat in those spots.  The body loses fat over the entire body, not just in the spot you exercises.

Ok, now that we’ve got that out of the way…toning muscles involves doing more reps with a moderate amount of resistance than muscles building which needs lower reps and higher resistance.  Instead of investing in a lot of equipment that you don’t need or may not even have the room for, but a set of high quality, anti-snapping, adjustable Bodylastics resistance bands.  You’ll be able to workout your entire body with them and a complete set starts at under $50.

One buttock exercise you can do for the glute muscles would be hip extensions.  Secure the Bodylastics  door anchor to the door about shin height (middle of your lower leg).  Attach an ankle strap to one of your ankles.  Slip an elastic tube through the door anchor loop and attach both clips to the ankle strap.  Stand about 3-4 feet away from the door so the strap is taut.  You can put one hand on a chair back for balance.  Keep your back and head straight and pelvis tucked.  Don’t arch your back.  Straighten the leg with the ankle strap, squeeze the buttocks and push the leg back from your heel to pull the elastic tube until it’s slightly past your body.  If you don’t feel enough resistance, increase the tension.  Click here to download a free chart to learn how to combine the Bodylastics bands
