I want to start pilates- I know you can do it with exercise equipment or a mat… What does the exercise equipment involve and is it expensive? I’m completely new to this. I want to get a dvd so I can work out in my dorm when i go to college, any suggestions on the best dvd to get?

Pilates uses these big-ass platforms called Reformers. They look like low-to-the-ground bed frames and even the cheaper ones are over $2,000. As for the mat part, that’s just for your own comfort – get a thick pilates mat, though.
You don’t need a Reformer to do Pilates. You can get the resistance you need from resistance bands like the ones shown below. And since you’re going to be working out in your dorm room, the bands are a perfect choice for a couple of reasons. Obviously, there’s the space issue. Dorm rooms aren’t exactly dance halls. The bands can be stored in their own travel bag or gym bag, depending on the set you get. Or you can get your own gym bag or back pack. Or even shove them in a draw or hang them on the back of a door.
As for that Pilates DVD, you don’t need one because the makers of these resistance bands, Bodylastics, has free pilates workouts online. There’s a new show every day. The workouts are live, but they record all of the shows so with your busy schedule, you can watch them any time. All you need is a computer and an internet connection.
